Where is Mauritius?

Mauritius, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa Continent. Mauritius is a subtropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, approximately 1,130 kilometers east of Madagascar, off Africa’s south-eastern coast. Rodrigues Island and other smaller islands are among its outlying territories. The lovely country is located in Africa, not Asia. Don’t get us mixed up with Madagascar, the Maldives, or Mauritania! People refer to Mauritius as the “Jewel of the Indian Ocean.” The island of Mauritius is well-known for its coral reefs, white sandy beaches, economy, and luxury hotels. And, of course, there are friendly people! Where are Mauritians from? The multi-cultural population hails from African countries, Asia, and Europe. The citizen can communicate in French, English, Creole, Hindi, and other Asian languages.

Mauritius is located in the south-west Indian Ocean, off the coast of the continent of Africa. Mauritius map also shows that it is a group of islands situated around 900 km east of Madagascar.

The Mauritius location map depicts the country’s precise geographic position in the world. It is the 170th largest country in the world by area.

The land area is only 2040 km2, and the capital city is Port Louis. The country’s major languages are Mauritian Creole, French, and English. But, English is the official language, Mauritian Creole is the language of the French. Newspapers and television shows are mostly in French.

Mauritius’ government is a parliamentary republic. It belongs to the African Union and the Southern African Development Community. La Francophonie and the Commonwealth of Nations, as well as the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa.

There are many ethnic groups in the region, the most notable of which being Asian, African, and Chinese. The Indian Ocean location and tropical temperature draw visitors from all over the world. Tourism in Mauritius contributes a lots to the country’s total revenue. Other economic activity in the region include sugarcane fields and textiles. Processing of seafood, information technology, and, of course, medical tourism.

Mauritius is located in the southern hemisphere, in the south-eastern part of the Indian Ocean, north of the tropic of the Capricorn, 20° South Latitude and 57° Longitude East. Mauritius is part of southern Africa.

Where is Mauritius located in the Indian Ocean?

Only 220 km away is Reunion Island, which belongs to France. Travel west and you’ll come across  Madagascar. It is about 805 km away.

The African continent’s east coast is about 1800 km further west. India is 3,200 km to our north, and Western Australia is 5,854 km to our east.

The Mascarene Islands archipelago

The Mascarene Islands formed 8-10 million years ago with undersea volcanic eruptions. They are located in the western Indian ocean about 1878 km south of the Seychelles.

This volcanic island group consists of the following islands:

  • Mauritius is a sovereign republic.
  • Rodrigues is a dependency of the Republic of Mauritius.
  • Reunion is a French department.

Rodrigues  is only 18 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide!

On the Google Maps, zoom in. On the north-eastern side of Mauritius, look for the words “Port Mathurin.” Rodrigues’ capital city is about 617 kilometers away.

International airport of Mauritius

In the south-east corner of the island, we have a world-class international airport. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Airport is our airport’s name. It was named after the country’s first prime minister after independence.

Mauritius is approximately a 12-hour flight away from Europe. Ten hours from Hong Kong, eight hours from Perth. Six hours from Dubai and Mumbai, and approximately three hours from South Africa.

If you are in the Northern Hemisphere. Remember that our seasons are the polar opposite of yours in the Southern Hemisphere. Summer time is during the holidays of Christmas and New Year’s and… Beyond. Winter (yes, we have one) is in July and August.

A tropical island may be exotic to you, but snow is exotic to us! Many Mauritanians can only dream of a white Christmas..

Currency and entry requirements

To enter Mauritius, you may not need a visa. Yet, there are extra documents you must present to the passport control officer. Otherwise, you will be denied entry into the country. This information is available on my Mauritius travel page.
