Mauritius Wedding Legal Requirments

Couples from all over the world choose Mauritius to get married. On this beautiful paradise island, people of all nationalities can legally marry. Even though avoiding the legal paperwork is impossible, we make every effort to ensure you complete all paperwork on time and stress-free.

The most important detail regarding the Mauritius wedding legal requirements is to bring the original copies of all necessary documents.

What documents do we need to provide?

Copies of any required paperwork should be sent at least eight weeks before your arrival. These can be delivered by fax, email, or postal mail.

The following documents must be submitted:

  • 2 passport copies
  • Two copies of birth certificates
  • Two passport photos each;
  • Absolute decree (in the event of a divorce)
  • If the name has changed, the Deed Poll
  • Certificate of death and, if widowed, proof of prior marriage
  • Documents written in languages other than English must be translated into English and properly stamped.
  • Citizens of other nations and holders of French passports must provide us with their documents three months before their arrival.

The couple should also schedule a free day prior to their big day (it must be a working day, not a Saturday, Sunday, or public holiday) so they can complete all local legal requirements and obtain the necessary documents for their wedding in Mauritius.

To complete the wedding documents, the prospective couple must visit four offices in Port Louis. A coordinator and driver from our firm will be with the couple the entire time.

There are four offices to visit:

  1. Civil Status  office, Port Louis: All documents will be double-checked and authorized
  2. Attorney at Law: All original documents will be checked here and the affidavits will be prepared
  3. Supreme Court of Mauritius, the couple will swear affidavits. The couple must be well dressed; men must not wear shorts, and arms must be covered for women (no need for a shirt, tie, or jacket; smart/casual is acceptable).
  4. Civil Status Sub Office, in the district closest to your hotel for the wedding publication. It is also the place where you will discuss the wedding time and vows. The officer is the only person who can confirm the ceremony time.
