The “underwater waterfall” in Mauritius is a fascinating optical illusion that has captured the attention of many people. However, it’s important to note that there is no actual underwater waterfall in Mauritius. The illusion of an underwater waterfall is created by the interaction of sand and sediment deposits with ocean currents and the shape of the ocean floor.
The southwestern coast of Mauritius features a steep drop-off known as the Mascarene Plateau, which descends from shallow waters to depths of over 4,000 meters. This sudden change in depth creates a stark contrast in the color of the water, with the shallow coastal waters appearing turquoise and the deeper ocean appearing dark blue. The sand and sediment from the coastal areas are carried by ocean currents and appear to flow down the “slope” of the Mascarene Plateau, creating the illusion of an underwater waterfall.
