What to See

While exploring Mauritius’ great flora and wildlife, be sure to check out some fun things to do. You can find them in the botanical gardens.

Spice Garden

The botanical garden’s spice garden has a rich history. King Louis XV gathered plants and seeds. He did this to start a spice garden. This resulted in the botanist Pierre Poivre. The secret fact is that France wished to end the Dutch spice monopoly. Aromatic spices included camphor, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

Giant tortoise.

Giant turtles from the Indian Ocean have sought safety here. They are nearly extinct. They can ride waves across the ocean and swim for weeks at a time.

Giant water Lillies

A famous German horticulturist found the big water lily, Victoria Amazonica. He found it among the plants of the Amazon. Later on, they dedicated the bell in Queen Victoria’s honour. Director O’Connor brought this species to the Botanical Gardens in 1927. The Mont Plaisir Chateau

Le Château Mon Plaisir

The British built Le Château Mon Plaisir in 1823 to accommodate the garden’s director. It was also employed as a quarantine zone during the cholera outbreak a few years later. The ‘castle’ appears to have been built on the site of the French governor Mahe de Labourdonnais’ residence.
