The temperate environment makes it a perfect habitat for a variety of whale species. Mauritius has three different varieties of whales. The sperm, pilot, and humpback whales, in particular. Whales migrate south to mate and return to the Antarctic Ocean in the winter.
Humpback whales are among the world’s largest whales. Its adults can weigh up to 35 tons and have a length of up to 15 meters. That’s roughly equal to a 62-seater school bus. They have a black back with white on the underside in various shades.
Sperm whales are significantly larger than humpback whales. It’s capable of weighing up to 60 tons and stretching up to 18 meters in length. Their heads are block-shaped, and they are dark grey in hue. Throughout the year, sperm whales can be seen in the Mauritius seas.
Pilot whales are the smartest whales, capable of forming strong friendships. Members of a social group might stick together and defend one another. Pilot whales have wide, rounded heads and are brown or black in color. They are smaller than the preceding two, reaching a length of 7 meters.
