Notre Dame Auxiliatrice de Cap Malheureux
Cap Malheureux Mauritius
Located in Cap Malheureux, the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice is one of the oldest churches to have witnessed one of the well-documented battles between the French and the British for possession of the island
It was created to commemorate shipwrecks off the northern shore. It is sometimes referred to as “the red roof chapel” and is well-known for both its aesthetic and historical significance. The church, with its vivid red roof, is unique and a postcard-worthy feature in Mauritius.
This church stands out among other churches on the island for its simple architecture and muted color scheme. Founded in the 1900s, this Roman Catholic Church continues to attract as many tourists as it attracts believers.
Notre Dame’s auxiliary chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, also boasts a nice little beach just behind the main building. The church attracts many newlyweds and boasts an excellent choir that is well known in the country. This church is definitely worth a visit if you are in the north of Mauritius.
The most convenient method to get to the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice is to take one of the many public buses from Port Louis’ Immigration Square, which will drop you off at Cap Malheureux after a little detour via Grand Baie in less than 30 minutes.
If you are the type of person who prefers to hold the steering wheel, you may simply set out on a drive from Port Louis, staying primarily on the M2, entering the A5, and exiting only on the B13.
The latter allows you to park your automobile in front of the Red gates of Notre Dame Cathedral in less than 50 minutes.
This little village has a truly idyllic location, with its beach and fisherman wandering about. The area is made up of a few private houses and includes a marine cemetery, a Hindu temple, and the well-known red-roofed Chapel of Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice, which appears on many postcards and all tourist guides.
