ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A visitor must be in possession of a valid passport and a return or onward ticket. A visitor's visa is granted normally for one month, but can be renewed for a further period upon request. Visas may be obtained from Mauritius Embassies and High Commissions. An international vaccination certificate against yellow fever is needed if arriving from an infected area. There is no risk of malaria in Mauritius.
CUSTOMS
Passengers of 16 years of age and over are allowed the following duty-free items; 250g of tabacco (cigars and cigarettes); 2 litres of wine, ale or beer, 1 litre of spirits and 25 cl litre of Eau de Toilette and a quantity of perfume not exceeding 10 cl. Plants and seeds, fresh fruits and flowers must be declared to Customs upon arrival and are subject to examination. An Import Permit must be obtained from the Minister of Agriculture prior to their introduction. The same procedures apply for animals, which must also undergo a quarantine period. Firearms must be declared on arrival.
Airport Tax & Facilities
All passengers over 12 years of age embarking at SSR International Airport (Plaisance) are required to pay an airport service tax of +|- Rs 500 (payable on purchase of ticket). SSR International Airport is located on the southeast coast, 45 kilometres from Port Louis, the capital of Mauritius. There are excellent duty-free shops, and facilities also include bank, a post office, a bar and a restaurant.
Currency
The monetary unit is the Mauritian Rupee (Rs) which is divided into 100 cents. Notes: Rs 25, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500, Rs 1000 and Rs 2000. Coins: 5 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, Rs 1, Rs 5 and Rs 10. Exchange rates are subject to fluctuation. Visitors to Mauritius are allowed up to Rs 700 in notes on arrival and may take out Rs 350 when leaving. There is no restriction on the importation of foreign currency in any form, such as credit cards, drafts, notes and travellers'cheques. Credit cards are widely accepted especially VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Diners Club.
DRIVING
Mauritius is a left-hand drive country, with priority to the right. Parking zones exist in the main towns.
